Andorra

For such a small country in Europe, Andorra makes a big impact. Last winter, one in seven British skiers and boarders visited this Pyrenean country, which blends the best of neighbouring France and Spain - that's more than go to Switzerland, the US and Canada combined, and nearly as many as go to Italy or Austria.

Andorra's popularity comes as a result of the huge investment in expanding the ski areas, upgrading lifts and opening new hotels. The country is still a great place to learn skiing or boarding, but prices have been creeping up. A week's lift pass is now € 138 in high season.

Skiing

Andorra Soldeu has benefited most from the investment. The Riba Escorxada beginners' area is larger than before and a fast chairlift has been installed to the Tossal de la Llosada, opening up good red runs in the bowl below. The link to Canillo is included on the Soldeu lift pass and the Rossinyol blue run is worth the trek. New this year is a five-day ski workshop in Soldeu to hone techniques with video analysis. Call 376 851 538; price e189. Check out El Tarter for its Disney themed kids' area: you might see Tigger skiing.

Pas de la Casa's strength is its wide-open, cruising red slopes and ski area of 100km. Arinsal's funnel-shaped ski area makes it ideal for keeping an eye on the children. The resort is also targeting boarders with a freestyle area covering 40,000 square metres, including a permanent boardercross, fun boxes and a quarter pipe.

Next door, Pal is virtually all tree skiing - picturesque and a good choice when visibility drops. Arcalis, a smaller resort, has the country's toughest skiing but no accommodation.

Apré-...

Arinsal, Soldeu and Pas de la Casa kick off at night. Beer, at € 3 or € 4 a pint, isn't the bargain it used to be but spirits in large measures are better value. Bars and clubs open till 3am or 4am, most do not charge. The Surf Bar, to the left of the gondola station in Arinsal, is very popular. Try a real Argentinian steak while you're here. The Avalanche bar in Soldeu is the best bar in town, with DJ Novice spinning chart and dance classics. Head to the Pussycat for early hours bopping while Pas de la Casa's Milwaukee bar is good for live bands. Andorra
